February 2015 Faves

Posted in Living by

Contrary to that image, ice has NOT been one of my favorite things this month. The last week has basically had Nashville shut down – not fun. It’s mostly melted now, but the roads are all torn up with potholes and

IMG_6312Lipstick: I’ve been loving e.l.f.’s Studio Matte Lip Color in Rich Red for months now. It’s only the second lipstick I’ve ever repurchased (the other being MAC’s Viva Glam 2). I have long searched for the “perfect” red, and I’m lucky that my soulmate rouge is only $3 and can be found at Target, Walgreen’s, and other similar retailers.

App: VSOCam. It’s kind of an older app, but it’s still one of my favorite photo editors. I put almost everything through this bad boy and it makes me look great.

TV: It’s no secret that I love trashy TV, but even I have always considered myself to have some basica morals. No longer do I feel that way, as I’ve recently broken my “I will never watch a Real Housewives series or spinoff!” Since I work in a restaurant now, my coworkers and I have become obsessed with Vanderpump Rules.

Fitness: For years, I’ve wanted to get into yoga. The closest I’ve ever really gotten is Blogilates, and while I do love that, I wanted something a little more “traditional.” I recently found Yoga With Adriene when a friend sent it a long, and we’ve really enjoyed it. Adriene is a great teacher and she makes everything feel very possible and not out of reach.

gone girl

Movie: I’m not a big movie fan at all, but last night I just felt like it was a great night to curl up under blankets and rent a movie on demand. We picked Gone Girl, and it was such a great movie. I hadn’t read the book first (I’m typically a stickler for that) but I wanted to see the film before I got spoiled on anything. Those kinds of psychological thrillers are my favorites, and this one DEFINITELY did not disappoint. And hey, Neil Patrick Harris played a character inspired by me! 🙂 the film ended and Sixx and I had a great conversation about truth and relationships. It’s all very interesting and the movie is now one of my favorites.

Food: My favorite treat continues to be the pumpkin muffins I posted a recipe for last year. I make them for every party and occasionally just for days to take into the office. If you’re making them as mini muffins, pop them out of the oven about two minutes before the regular recipe calls for.

Podcast: After devouring and obessing over Serial with the rest of the world last year, I’ve gotten really into true crime podcasts. My BFF found Sword & Scale shortly after Serial ended and she quickly devoured the whole series. I’ve been slower to get into it, but I really enjoy it. The more Dateline I watch and true crime I read, I really question if music is right for me and if maybe I shouldn’t be in criminology!

The Other Parts of California

Posted in Living, Travel, Work Out by

Even though we were really only in California for a few days, I feel like we did SO much! I’ve already written about one of the best parts of our trip (Sweat class with Richard Simmons!) and obviously Tink will be its own post, but I thought I’d give another update on what we did while we were there. I feel like we didn’t sleep at all, and we laughed SO much. I feel very fortunate that NP went on this trip with me!

the doctors

Over Christmas while watching all the talk shows with giveaways, we thought we should try to see a taping and see if we could score some free loot 😉 I would have loved to see Ellen, but her shows book so far in advance that there was no way. NP is a really big fan of The Doctors, so I signed us up to see that one. A couple weeks went by before I heard anything about it, and figuring we didn’t get tickets to it either, I forgot about it. About a week before we left, a show producer called and we were in!

We definitely thought there was no way we were going to make it – this was the only time we hit traffic during the whole trip, and all the signage and e-mails we got made it sound like if you weren’t there by 7:30 that you wouldn’t get in for the taping. Apparently this show is hard to fill audiences for, so we were in just fine. They held us in the Dr. Phil studio while the doctors wrapped up their rehearsals, and a page came and took everyone with a pink VIP ticket to the studio. It was a pretty long day and they did two shows (we had gotten up at 5:30 and were at the taping until 1:30,) but it was a fun experience. We came away with about $300 in hair and body products and it was cool to see the “behind the scenes” stuff of a talk show. Plus it will be funny to see which of my friends watches this show when I get the “I SAW YOU ON TV!” messages. If you’re ever in LA and want to go to a TV taping, it sounds like The Doctors shows are easy to get into. (Plus Dr. Travis is not too bad on the eyes – I actually met and got a rose from him back when he was on the Bachelor!) Dr. Berman asked NP if we are sisters, which I loved. I have always thought that NP is the most beautiful woman in the world, so it’s nice when people see some of her in me!

THE GROVE

After that, we headed over to The Grove to do some celebrity hunting. I was really hoping to spot a Glee cast member, but it was not to be. We wandered around and didn’t do any shopping here, but we ate at the Farmer’s Market which was amazing. I had the best shawarma wrap, NP got fish tacos, and I topped it off with a cabernet sauvignon sorbet cone. The environment was really cool, and it had way fewer stores than I expected. After sitting in traffic for two hours, we went to the race expo and ate and shopped at downtown Disney.

newport beach

Saturday we planned to have just a really relaxing day before the race, and I could have laid next to the California ocean at Newport Beach all day long. We walked the boardwalk, grabbed some juice for breakfast, and set up camp on the sand. NP read while I napped. The beach was beautifully clean and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. (I also got a frozen banana and pretended George Michael served it to me.) We retired pretty early that night and just watched Bridesmaids in the room and prepared for the race the next morning. I did have a meltdown this day about my food, because I had tried to eat very intentionally and have set times I wanted to have specific meals. That didn’t work out at all and I called Sixx and just sobbed about my “food being messed up.” Clearly I was just beyond overly tired.

What’s your favorite thing to do on vacation? How do you relax and prepare the day/night before the race?

June Favorites

Posted in Living by

June isn’t over yet, but I’ve discovered a whole lot of new “stuff” this month that I don’t know how I lived without! Here are some of my new favorites from June.

Now Almond Oil – My roommate uses this and I was curious, so he let me try it. My face was so dewey and had such a great glow, and soothed the mini-sunburn I started to develop. I expected it to be greasy, but it wasn’t.

Received from InfluensterI received the Luster Now Instant whitening toothpaste to review from Influenster, and it’s billed as providing “instant whitening after just one use.” I didn’t really buy into it – but I did have whiter teeth after one brushing! I’ve used it at least once a day since the first time I got it and while the initial “OMG!” of it has worn off, they are getting progressively whiter. This would be a great toothpaste to wear on special occasions like engagement photos, a wedding, or even a special date. Here’s my “before and after” comparison:

Learning Spanish and brushing up my German are two things that are on my 30 Before 30 list. My friends started talking about this app they were using to learn French, so I checked it out. Duolingo offers five different language pods (German, Spanish, French, Italian and Portugese) and I’m totally obsessed with it – I could just sit at my desk all day going through lessons. If you use Duolingo on your computer or iOS device, let’s be friends!

Trader Joe’s PB&J Chocolate Bar – I was always intrigued by this at check out and thought it would Trader Joe's PB&J barbe gross. Last time I was in, I thought I’d pick it up as a little treat. The cashier said that they’re really good and he’s addicted to them – and he was right. It was SO good. There’s a lot of sugar in it and I felt pretty hopped up after I ate it, but I love chocolate/peanut butter, and the texture of the raspberry jam was a nice addition.

sports nightI caught up on Scandal and fell in LOVE with Joshua Malina and decided that I needed to watch his entire filmography, which led me to Sports Night. This 1998-2000 Aaron Sorkin show is definitely one of my favorites of all time – I watched the entire series in four days. The Jeremy/Natalie relationship is just perfect, it has great writing, great casting – the only bad thing about it is that it lasted only two seasons. (I actually got deeply, deeply invested in this show and went spiralling into depression when I finished the series.)

What have you been digging this month? Have you ever seen the perfection that is Sports Night?
