Record Store Day is one of the most wonderful times of the year for music fans – it’s a time to line up outside your favorite store and hope you’ll get to pounce on all the limited releases and deluxe editions the retailers are sent. I’ve had some remarkable Record Store Days, from the time I got a black eye in competition for a Dave Matthews Band release (I wish I was kidding) to the time I got my favorite Hold Steady record on vinyl. It’s a day that’s always been close to my heart because in college I got to sit in on a few roundtables about planning the next year’s national event, which was really cool. The 2017 edition is this Saturday, so download your list, get ready to line up, head to the store, and be sure to check out the bands that are playing! These are the bands with releases this year I’m excited to check out. If you have a minute before diving in to the jams, please take my reader survey!
Mayer Hawthorne, Someone Like You
Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit: Hope the High Road
Sunny Day Real Estate: Rain Song
Goo Goo Dolls, ‘Cuz You’re Gone
Are you a vinyl fan? What releases are you excited for this year?
Last month I headed to Kansas City to visit my cousin and attend a conference for work, and it was maybe the best week of my musical life. Folk Alliance is a week long folk version of South by Southwest that is contained in a hotel, so there’s no running from venue to venue to catch the set you waited to see. When I couldn’t sleep in the middle of the night I just headed downstairs to the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors to check out new music or watch my old friends pick and stomp their hearts out.
It’s little secret to anyone, probably, that I am a serial song repeater. Not only will I listen to certain songs on repeat for hours and days, there are full albums I’ve done this with for years and years now. In an effort to stop myself from doing this and in order to get through the huge list of jams I accumulated at Folk Alliance, I made myself a running playlist of my very favorite finds. I pride myself on making a great playlist, but this is honestly one of my greatest! If you’re looking for some new music to help you get through your next workout, load this up on your phone and give it a spin.
I’m not sure if today is National Best Friend day, or if it was yesterday, but whatever, we’re celebrating it here today! When I was younger, I used to be obsessed with Boston. That season of The Real World (and that house!) was one of my favorites, and there was always some sort of mystique to the city for me. In fact, I almost tried to go on a solo vacation there in 2006 (but ended up visiting New Orleans with friends instead.) My friend Dani moved to Boston about a year and a half ago, and I’m so excited to not only finally visit the city, but also to go see my partner in crime! Here’s to a weekend full of beaches, doughnuts, new TV shows, and above all – COFFEE!
To celebrate the occasion, I made us a playlist of our favorite songs and thought I’d share it here. It’s great for getting ready to go out with your girlfriends, or getting pumped up in the morning!
ast night was another one of the greatest musical moments of my life – I’ve been lucky to have a lot of those lately! In January, Ryan Adams announced two nights at the Ryman, and I HAD to go. Without thinking and $50 later, I was the lucky owner of a ticket to one of the most popular shows that will come to Nashville probably for the entire time I’ll live here. I have seen him previously (in 2012 at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, which is still one of the best bills I’ve ever seen) but I wasn’t as into him as I am now. To get to see him at the Ryman was super special, and I’ve been excited for months. A friend and I spent the day texting each other our dream setlist (which ended up being most of his catalog) and the show was even more than I could have hoped for or expected when he brought Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires out for a few songs. Since I’m still coming down from the show, today’s Tune Tuesday is all about the man!
The Rescue Blues: everybody wants to see you fall, that’s why they always love to get you high / and everybody knows you need the pain so much, lady / well, keep in touch, baby
Oh My God, Whatever, Etc: if I could I’d fold myself away like a card table / a concertina or a murphy bed, I would but I wasn’t made that way so you know instead / I’m open all night and the customers come to stay and everyone tips but not enough to knock me over and “I’m so tired,” I just worked two shifts
Do I Wait: do I want to say the things that I say when I know that they are wrong? / do I wait here forever for you? could you ask me to? / do you watch me from the corner of your eye? do we say goodbye?
Stay With Me: I love you baby, just treat me right / hold me closer in the middle of the night / I love you girl, and it’s alright / stay with me, stay with me
