Dr. Cool Recovery On-The-Go {review}

I discovered Dr. Cool Recovery On-The-Go wraps when I was having really bad knee problems, looking for a solution that didn’t involve me trying to wrap bags of ice onto myself (you can imagine how cute that was.) Dr. Cool are wraps that you can use frozen or unfrozen for extra support during a workout (or workday, if you have work-related pain.) This video gives a quick introduction:

The wraps only take 20 minutes to freeze, so when I received mine in the mail I tested it immediately, wrapping up my knee and elevating it while I watched USA hockey dominate Russia in the Olympics. Two benefits stuck out to me right away: since the ice was wrapped around and velcroed to me, I could just get up and do whatever I wanted without the production of shifting around ice bags, and the second was that with the wrap, you don’t have to use towels to protect skin from ice burn.

dr. coolAfter trying it on my knee, I also wrapped up my wrist and it was incredible. It’s so hard to ice my tendinitis because I’m not talented enough to balance an ice bag on my wrist, and my Dr. Cool wrap has alleviated so much pain. I use it two or three times a week at work now on my wrist, and as needed post-BodyPUMP on my knee. Like my also-loved KT Tape, the Dr. Cool website offers videos that demonstrate application for common injuries.

I absolutely recommend Dr. Cool to anyone who is stubborn like me and refuses to let pain stop me from a workout. The compression and ice wrap makes it possible to stay active, whether it’s lifting at the gym or going out hiking. They even sell a “Dr. Cooler” which is essentially a cooler to keep the wrap cool if you aren’t going to use it right away. (I’m going to try this out at Nike half and check it in my bag!) February Favorites

It has been awhile since I have done a favorites post, so I thought I would churn a quick one out in case anyone is looking for some new products to try! (And this time I promise I won’t include the Palm Beach Cooler candle… if only because it’s not available anymore.)

fitleticbeltFitletic running belt – I have run my last three races (one 5k and two half-marathons) with this belt, and I’m crazy about it. The zipper pouch is the perfect size for my preferred fuel (PowerBar Energy Chews) and it will also hold my inhaler. The version I have is the single pouch with race number holder, and I have really liked not having to worry about hunting down safety pins on race day or centering my bib on my shirt.

beenchantedBath & Body Works Be Enchanted body lotion – Knowing my relationship with BBW and their scents, this will get retired soon. But in the meantime, I’m loving it. It’s sweeter than I normally use (I tend to go for the hotter, sexier, muskier scents) and normally prefer body cream vs. lotion, but they revamped their lotion formula and it’s thicker than it used to be for super hydration.

Bell’s Smitten – As everyone knows, I live for anything Michigan – especially beer. Bell’s is my favorite brewery, and I’m lucky to at least live in a state where they carry lots of their beer. When I showed up to catsit last week, I found a six-pack of their new spring seasonal and OH EM GEE it is phenomenal. I will not be found far from a bottle of this American Pale Ale until Oberon day. (February means it’s the countdown to summer beers!) Plus, I love the graphic design for this brew – the turquoise and yellow are a great combination with the flower to signal that spring is (maybe? finally?) coming.

drcoolwrapDr. Cool Wrap – I’m going to do a full review and giveaway of these next month, but after using mine this weekend, it has to make the list for a quick review. If you’ve been following along at home, you know I was diagnosed with tendinitis in September 2012, right before I moved for a graphic design job. Since then, I’ve been fighting the pain off and on using KT Tape, ibuprofen, and wrist braces. The Dr. Cool wrap is like many other support braces, except that you can use it dry or freeze it for extra relief. It’s been a game changer for me already after testing it on both my wrist and my knee.

Deny, Deny, Deny

Even though I have been running for over a year and am training for my first triathlon, I still don’t think of myself as an athlete. Or at least, I didn’t until last week. Sure, I’m competitive, but not overly so. I love training and running, and while I do tend to build my weeks around workouts, I never thought it would feel overly earth-shattering if I had to take a break.

Turns out, it is kind of earth-shattering.

Sometime in mid-December, I was feeling a twinge in my knee. I just figured it was runner’s knee (even though, at the time, I was focusing much more on lifting and cross-training). Since it wasn’t constant and was never uncomfortable enough for me to stop, I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it, just pretended it wasn’t there. I taped both knees up for Tink (as I always do during races) and it was fine. When I came back and started doing my BodyPUMP classes (2-3 times a week), the pain was finally unbearable. It got so bad that I actually had to leave during last Monday’s class, and I haven’t been back to the gym since.

This is my life now.

I have a race this weekend, and even though I don’t typically feel the pain while running, I’m still scared. The plan was to go back today to my favorite BodySTEP class, but I’m nervous even of that now. The physical therapy exercises my doctor gave me are helping a little, but the pain got worse after I went in to see her. It’s just so frustrating to not be able to do something I want so badly to do. After years as a lazy couch potato, I finally just want to work out, and my body isn’t cooperating.

Yesterday, I was sitting in the bathroom on the phone with Sixx. I heard someone run past outside, doing laps around the concourse, and I just lost it.

So here I sit with ice on my knees, extra-large bottle of Ibuprofen at hand, just hoping for the best when I try to go to the gym tonight.
